Why Be Accessible?

There are over 54 million people in the US alone with some form of disability. This includes people with impaired motor skills, the blind or visually impaired, and people with many other types of impairments. Research has shown that 48% of adults with disabilities believe that the Internet has significantly improved their quality of life, but the vast majority of websites are still inaccessible to this market of users, and of course to the many more who have not yet come online due to the dearth of accessible services.

To use their computers, people with disabilities typically utilize additional software and/or hardware such as screen readers, Braille readers, voice activated keyboards, and screen magnifiers. However, such tools are only effective with sites that are designed and coded appropriately. For individuals with difficulty using a mouse, navigating a website becomes an impossible task. For those using screen readers (a device that reads aloud the HTML code of a website), the use of images on a website without accompanying explanatory text renders the site unintelligible.

These are just some of the many possible obstacles a disabled user encounters when trying to surf the Web.

UB Access provides solutions for companies and Web designers who want their sites to be accessible to disabled users without having to change their existing sites or learn complex new methods of design. Contact us and we'll show you how.
